Tent Poles DIY

OK I needed some and combined with my boredom I decided to build my own

A bit overkill, better than too weak though

I feel these will safely support a large tarp if need be & easily enough my small hex fly from Hennessey hammocks

However for ease of storage in my Thule, these collapse to just over 5’ as my main objective

So I started off with 10’ of 1 ¼” pvc Sked 40 tubing, cut to make 2 equal 5’ section

Another 10’of 1” pvc Sked 40 tubing, also cut to make 2 equal 5’ section

As shown here:

Take the 1” end caps & drill a ¼” hole in the center of each

Get all your hardware ready

Place the bolt through the hole as shown, large washer is against pvc end caps

2014-05-06101752.jpg

Tighten down & place 2nd nut to secure in place

2014-05-06101843.jpg

Completed should look something like this

2014-05-06102000.jpg

Once you have them completed, I added some 2 part epoxy for added measure

2014-05-06103405.jpg

2014-05-06103516.jpg

I then glued the end caps on the 1” tubing, placed a magic marker mark & drilled a ¼ “ securing hole for either a bolt & wing nut or clevis pin while slid into the 1 1/4" tubing

More once these are dried

Parts list:

10’ of 1 ¼” pvc Sked 40 tubing, cut to make 2 equal 5’ section

10’of 1” pvc Sked 40 tubing, also cut to make 2 equal 5’ section

2 – 1 ¼” pvc end caps

2-1” pvc end caps

Small package of #10 bolts x2”

#10 flat washers

4- ¼” flat washers

I see what you were planning now. Very cool. you need a larger diameter length of pvc, and a recoil setup of some sort so you can keep your rainfly in it on the top of your rig like an old projection screen that pulls out. That would be cool fastened to the top of your rig painted black.

yes so I can have a shade off of the rig or also off my M416 trailer in the same fashion

too frugal to buy one of those vehicle awnings plus it would interefer with my ham antennas that right now have more priority for me

Yes and you could use a rod or dowel or aluminum tubing or emt to stiffen up the edge between the poles. You could put closed eye bolts on the ends, slide them over the bolts that protrude through your pole caps, then wing nut them down to secure the whole assembly. It would enable you to have a nice taut awning that is more weatherproof and could possibly expand further from there...
